Dinesh Gunawardena Appointed As New Prime Minister Of Sri Lanka

Mumbai: Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Friday appointed senior politician Dinesh Gunawardena as the new Prime Minister of the country.

He took oath as prime minister of Sri Lanka in the prime minister’s office on Flower Road, Colombo.

Images shared by Sri Lankan media showed President Ranil Wickremesinghe presiding over the swearing-in ceremony.

Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to announce his new cabinet later today. Dinesh Gunawardene is the first of many faces who are expected to lift the country out of the economic crisis in which it finds itself.

Gunawardene represents Mahajan Ekta Peramuna (MEP) from Maharagama as well as Colombo district and entered electoral politics during the 1970s.

Gunawardene has been a cabinet minister in previous governments. He has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Transport and Urban Development and held several other roles during his political career, which spanned five decades.
