ECI Grants Permission For Holding Legislative Council Elections In Maharashtra

Mumbai: In a recent development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday allowed elections to be held for the Legislative Council (MLC) in Maharashtra and said that the necessary guidelines for protection against COVID-19 are to be ensured during the elections.

According to sources, the deadline for Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to be elected will be before May 27.

Thackeray earlier today paid a courtesy visit at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai on the occasion of Maharashtra Day and met Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. Their meeting lasted for about 20 minutes.

Earlier, Governor Koshiyari had requested the ECI in a letter to hold elections for the nine seats of the Legislative Council in the state that had been vacant since April 24 with an aim to end the current uncertainty in the state.

He said that the Central Government has announced a number of waiver measures regarding the implementation of lockdown in the country. Koshyari said that elections to council seats could be held with certain guidelines.

He said that since Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is not a member of any House of the State Legislature, he needs to be elected to the Council before 27 May.

Earlier, Election Commission had withheld the election process for these nine seats in view of the COVID-19 situation in the country
