President Ram Nath Kovind's term ends on July 24 and elections for the next President are to be held before that day

Mumbai: The election for the next President of India will be held on July 18, ECI has said. The electoral college for the Presidential election consists of the 776 MPs of the Lok Sabha (543) and Rajya Sabha (233), as well as MLAs of state Assemblies and UTs of Delhi and Puducherry.

According to Article 62 of the Constitution, the election of the next President must take place before the completion of the term of the incumbent.

President Ram Nath Kovind’s term ends on July 24 and elections for the next President are to be held before that day.

The President is elected by the members of an electoral college consisting of elected members of both the Houses of Parliament and elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of all the states, including the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Nominated members of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha or State Assemblies are not eligible to be included in the electoral college and hence, they are not entitled to take part in elections.

Similarly, the members of the Legislative Councils are also not electors for the Presidential election. In 2017, the presidential elections were held on 17 July and the counting of votes took place on 20 July.
