Eoin Morgan, England’s 2019 World Cup-Winning Captain, Retires From International Cricket

Mumbai: Eoin Morgan, who led England to victory in the 2019 World Cup, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 35.

Morgan, who led England to their only ICC ODI World Cup win in 2019 at home, made the announcement just 10 days before the start of England’s limited-overs matches against India.

“After careful deliberation and consideration, I am here to announce my retirement from international cricket with immediate effect,” Morgan said in an ECB statement.

The Irish-born cricketer was expected to make the announcement in line with the turmoil in English cricket in recent months with the England and Wales Cricket Board as well as all-rounder Ben Stokes in the senior men’s team. Replaces Joe Root as Test captain.

Morgan was under a lot of pressure due to poor form with the bat, which could have been one of the reasons behind his decision.

He retired from the game with over 10,000 international runs under his belt, and he is currently England’s leading run-scorer in both ODIs ((7,701) as well as T20Is (2,458).
