Govt Declares Masood Azhar, Hafiz Saeed And Dawood Ibrahim As Terrorists Among Others Under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act

Mumbai: Government declared four people of Pakistan, including the mastermind of the Mumbai terror attack and Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed, are terrorists under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 2019.

Others named as terrorists are Jaish-e-Mohammed (JM) chief Masood Azhar, Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar have already been declared as global terrorists by the United States, the United Nations, and the European Union.

The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act allows the Center and States to designate individuals as terrorists and seize their property. The law was passed by Parliament last month.

“And whereas, the central government believes that Maulana Masood Azhar is involved in terrorism and Maulana Masood Azhar is to be notified as a terrorist under the said Act. And whereas, the central government believes that Hafiz Muhammad Saeed is involved in terrorism and Hafiz Muhammad Saeed is to be notified as a terrorist under the said Act,” a home ministry notification said.

Under the earlier law, only organizations could be designated as terrorist organizations and not individuals.

Saeed’s Lashkar-e-Taiba carried out several terrorist attacks, including the Red Fort attack of 2000, the Rampur attack, the 2008 Mumbai attacks, in which 166 people were killed.

JM militants attacked Parliament House and Jammu and Kashmir State Assembly Complex in 2001, killing nine and eight people respectively. Pathankot terror attack in 2016, Pulwama attack in February this year was also carried out by Gem terrorist.
