Harsh Vardhan Takes Charge As WHO Executive Board Chairman

Mumbai: Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan took charge as Chairman of WHO’s executive board on Friday, succeeding Japan’s Dr. Hiroki Nataki.

“I am aware I am entering this office at a time of global crisis on account of this pandemic. At a time, when we all understand that there will be many health challenges in the next 2 decades. All these challenges demand a shared responsibility,” said Dr. Harsh Vardhan.

India faced COVID19 in a proactive and preemptive way, with unmatched scale and determination. Today we have a mortality of 3% only. In a country of 1.35 billion, there are only 0.1 million cases of COVID19. The recovery rate is above 40% and the doubling rate is 13 days, Vardhan added.

In 2019, WHO’s South Asia group had unanimously agreed to elect India’s nominee for a three-year term beginning in May 2020 for the Executive Board, and 194 nations signed the proposal to elect India’s nominee to the executive board on Tuesday.

The board comprises 34 individuals, qualified in the field of Health, each one designated by a member-state elected to do so by the World Health Assembly.
