Hike In Platform Ticket Rates ‘Temporary Measure’ To Prevent Overcrowding At Stations: Railways

Mumbai: Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Railways has called for an increase in platform ticket rates as a “temporary measure” for passenger safety and to prevent congestion at stations.

This happens when the Indian Railways announces an increase in platform ticket rates at most stations. Issuing the clarification, the ministry said that the regulation and control of congestion at the stations is the responsibility of the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM).

The ministry said in a statement, “This is a temporary measure and area activity undertaken by the railway administration to protect passengers and prevent congestion at stations.”

He added, “Platform ticket fee is increased from time to time after locating more people to visit the station, assessing the ground situation. The power to change platform ticket charges is due to DRMs due to field management requirements,” it added.

The ministry said the measure has been in practice for many years and is sometimes used as a short-term crowd control measure and is “nothing new to it.” In February, the railway announced a “slight increase” in ticket fares for short-haul passenger trains to discourage people from unnecessary travel.
