Hong Kong In A Worst Situation Since Independence

Mumbai: Several thousand lawyers were seen marching, dressed in black, to call on the government to safeguard the independence of the City’s department of justice. It is also reported that the court has already arrested more than 500 people with an offence that could lead a jail of 10 years. The Hong Kong officials have also said that it was facing the worst crisis since its independence.

After the British rule in HK ended, it was the first time when Hong Kong had revolted against its ruling power. According to the head of China’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs said, “The anti-government protests rocked the Asian Financial hub.”

One of the senior Chinese officials, Zhang Xiaoming said, “Hong Kong’s crisis… has continued for 60 days, and is getting worse and worse. Violent activities are intensifying and the impact on society is spreading wider. It can be said that Hong Kong is now facing the most severe situation since its handover.”

It has now been two months since the condition of HK is in turmoil and the effects are now visible. The violent protests were carried in the opposition to the Extradition Bill which is now suspended and then morphed into a reform which demanded an end of Carrie Lam’s government in the region and calls to full democracy.

Zhang held a forum on Wednesday to discuss the political disturbances in Hong Kong which included HK’s delegates to China’s parliament and National people’s Congress and China’s main Consultative body, but the opposition leaders and protest representatives were not involved in this forum.

After the forum, no specific specifications of deploying the People’s liberation army was made in order to curb the violence of the people. The protests have been successful in bringing millions of people out on the streets to oppose the extradition bill.

A female lawyer who had taken part in the march said that she was marching to make sure the government knew that within the legal sector the citizens and lawyers will not allow the judicial independence to be compromised by politics or pressure from the Chinese government.
