Israel Orders 1.1 million Palestinians In Gaza To Move South In 24 Hours

Mumbai: The Israeli military has ordered about 1.1 million Palestinians in Gaza to relocate to the enclave’s south within the next 24 hours, UN said.

“It’s impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences,” UN said. Appealing Israel to rescind any such order, the UN urged the country to avoid transforming a tragedy into a calamitous situation.

According to U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, U.N. officials in Gaza “were informed by their liaison officers in the Israeli military that the entire population of Gaza north of Wadi Gaza should relocate to southern Gaza within the next 24 hours,” the organization said in announcing in New York.

According to Dujarric, “this amounts to approximately 1.1 million people,” or over half of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million. The major city in the enclave, Gaza City, is located north of Wadi Gaza.

Dujarric stated that the United Nations “considers it impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences.”

The warning came as Israel’s military gathered tanks close to the Gaza border and bombarded the territory with airstrikes; the military did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

However, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, appeared to corroborate that a warning had been sent when he remarked, “The U.N.’s response to Israel’s early warning to the residents of Gaza is shameful.”

According to Erdan, the U.N. ought to concentrate on denouncing Hamas and defending Israel’s right to self-defense.
According to Salama Marouf, chief of the media office for the Hamas administration, Israel is attempting, through the relocation warning, “to broadcast and pass on fake propaganda, aiming to sow confusion among citizens and harm our internal cohesion.”
