Maha Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray Requested PM Modi To Grant Elite Status To Marathi Language

The matter has now been reported to the Literature Academy's Language Committee for consideration

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray wrote a letter to PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday. He requested him to intervene with the authorities concerned to give Marathi language elite status.

In the letter, he said that a proposal dated November 16, 2013, made by an expert committee by the government of Maharashtra, had been submitted to the union government, in order to grant elite status to the Marathi language.

“The Marathi language fulfils the criteria required to attain elite language status. Despite repeatedly pursuing elite language status, the matter is pending with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of the central government,” Thackrey added.

He added that the matter is being pending for a long time, so Prime Minister should personally look into it and ensure that the Marathi language should be given elite status. The matter has now been reported to the Literature Academy’s Language Committee for consideration.
