NPR Will Not Affect Anyone’s Nationality: Amit Shah

Shah said that NPR was a series of steps initiated by the previous UPA government

Mumbai: As the cabinet has approved the implementation of National Population Register, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that NPR will not affect the nationality status of any citizen of the country.

In an exclusive interview with ANI editor Smita Prakash, Shah said, “NPR will not affect anyone’s nationality. Even if someone’s name is missing from NPR, their citizenship will not be threatened.”

Shah said that NPR was a series of steps initiated by the previous UPA government.

“It is a constitutional provision and it is the same exercise previously conducted by the Congress-led government. It is neither part of our manifesto nor our promise. It was a good move initiated by Congress Which is being followed right now,” he said.

A day after Shah’s remarks, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal for the conduct of Census 2021 of India and the up-gradation of the National Population Register.

He assured that no person should have any reason to be concerned about exercise and that the data collected under NPR is helpful for the government to make plans for the people.

“The data collected under NPR will be used to plan for the betterment of the public through central government schemes. It is not a practice to decide citizenship of any person,” Shah said.
