Malala Tweets On Hijab Ban In Karnataka College, Says ‘Stop Marginalisation Of Muslim Women’

Mumbai: Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai on Tuesday tweeted on the issue of the hijab ban in Karnataka college. Citing a news report on the same, the well-known women’s rights activist urged Indian leaders to ensure that Muslim women were not marginalised.

“Refusing to let girls go to school in their hijabs is horrifying. Objectification of women persists — for wearing less or more. Indian leaders must stop the marginalisation of Muslim women,” she wrote.

The controversy started last month when a government PU college in Udupi asked six students to wear headscarves and leave the campus in violation of the prescribed dress code. Since then, the protests have spread to various parts of the state and beyond.

In addition, some Hindu students and groups have responded to the agitation with saffron shawls and other similar protests. Recently the protests have turned violent.

Incidents of stone-pelting were reported on Tuesday and police used force and fired tear gas to control the situation. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai today announced a three-day holiday for all educational institutions.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court is considering the right of some Muslim girl students to wear headscarves and will resume hearing on Wednesday. HC observed today that only “some mischievous people” were burning the hijab issue.

The situation remained tense in many parts of the state, with police imposing restrictions in many areas.

According to reports, some students and a teacher were also injured in an incident of stone-pelting near a college in Rabkavi Banhatti of Bagalkot and some students tried to enter the campus. Student protests were also reported in educational institutions in Vijayapura, Gadag, Dakshina Kannada, Davangere and Chitradurga districts.
