Man, Others Beat Wife, Force Her To Marry Alleged Lover In Tripura

Mumbai: A woman was allegedly beaten up and forced to marry her “lover” on suspicion of having an extra-marital affair in Tripura’s Khowai, police said on Monday.

An official said that the alleged incident took place in Krishnapur under the Teliyamura police station area on Saturday night, after which the woman has been admitted to the hospital.

“We will send a team to meet the victim to know the actual incident. The police have not received any written complaint yet, but there will be an inquiry into the alleged incident,” Teliamura Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sonacharan Jamatia told PTI.

The woman told reporters that on Saturday night 15 men led by her husband took her to a paddy field on suspicion of having an extramarital affair and brutally thrashed her, after which she lost consciousness.

Her alleged boyfriend was also assaulted.

In a purported video that has gone viral on social media, a woman is being forced to change her garland with her alleged lover by villagers when she regains consciousness.

It also shows some youths forcing them to apply vermilion on the forehead of the woman.

The woman’s husband confessed to the media that he and his family members thrashed her for her alleged relationship with a man from the same village.

“After the incident, I took him to Teliyamura Hospital for treatment, and I spent the entire night there. The police visited my residence,” he said without remorse.

Tripura Commission for Women (TCW) chairperson Barnali Goswami condemned the alleged incident.

“In a civilised society, we can’t tolerate such gruesome torture on a woman. Forceful marriage between a married woman and a man is not a natural practice. We will send a team to meet the victim to know the actual sequence of events,” she said.
