‘No One Will Have To Leave The Country,’ Maha CM Uddhav Thackeray Counters CAA

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray met with 200 Muslim community leaders on Wednesday and assured that “nobody will have to leave the country” amid the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) by the Centre.

The meeting took place in the office of Commissioner of Police Sanjay Barve. The police said that the assembled people said they had the right to protest, but they should ensure that the laws were not broken, a report by The Indian Express said.

Apart from this, Muslim leaders also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, seeking to pass a resolution against the CAA in the state assembly.

“… We kindly request you to pass a resolution condemning the draconian and unconstitutional enactments passed by the BJP government which has been opposed in unprecedented ways not only in India but across the world. The Kerala and Punjab governments have already taken the lead and are hopeful that other states will follow it soon, ”the leading newspaper quoted from the memorandum.

In particular, people from all walks of life protested against the controversial act, demanding the repeal of the CAA — over the concern that it constitutes a criterion for granting citizenship to religion, which, in turn, the spirit of the Indian Constitution Violates Although the protests have subsided, they continue throughout India.

As per the CAA, members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014, following religious persecution there will get Indian citizenship.
