No Special Exemption For Actions Like This: US Amid India-Canada Row

Mumbai: Amid India-Canada row over killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said, “There’s not some special exemption you get for actions like this.”

The United States has been attempting to improve ties with India. Earlier this year, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a state visit to President Joe Biden at the White House.

When asked if US concern about the event may scuttle that process, Sullivan responded that the US will stand up for its values no matter which country is impacted.

“It is something that worries us. We consider it to be important. Sullivan told reporters at the White House, “It is something we will continue to work on, and we will do that regardless of the nation.

“You don’t get a particular break for doing things like this. No matter the nation, we will stand up and protect our fundamental values, and we will work closely with partners like Canada to support their diplomatic and law enforcement efforts.

On Monday, Canada said that it was “actively pursuing credible allegations” that Hardeep Singh Nijjar, 45, had been killed outside a Sikh temple in June by Indian government agents.

The United States was in contact with both nations regarding the matter, according to Sullivan.

According to Sullivan, “We have been in touch with the Indian government and are in constant contact with our Canadian counterparts.”

Reports that suggested there was a difference of opinion between Canada and the United States on the subject were refuted by Sullivan.

“I vehemently disagree with the notion that the US and Canada are at odds. We are quite concerned by the claims, and we want to see this inquiry continue and the offenders brought to justice,” he added.
