Take This Matter Seriously: Canada PM Justin Trudeau To India Amid Tensions

Mumbai: Canadian PM Justin Trudeau has said there are “credible reasons” to believe that India is behind the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. While addressing the media, PM Trudeau also asked India to take the allegations labeled by Canada seriously and allow justice to follow its course.

“As a country that upholds the rule of law, it is our responsibility to make sure that those proceedings are rigorous and impartial, and we are doing so in support of an order based on international law. We are emphasizing how reprehensible it would be for any nation to take part in the murder of a citizen on its soil,” said Prime Minister Trudeau.

The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, responded to the earlier allegations made by Canada against India by saying, “As I said on Monday, there are credible reasons to believe that agents of the Government of India were involved in the killing of a Canadian on Canadian soil, which is something of the utmost and foundational importance in the country of rule of law, in a world where international rules-based order matters. We urge the government of India to work with us to find the truth about this incident since we have an independent legal system and effective procedures that will go as planned.”

The prime minister continued, “India is a country of growing importance and a country that we need to continue working with not just in a region but around the world. We are not looking to provoke or cause problems, but we are straightforward about the importance of upholding the rule of law, protecting Canadians, and upholding values. We thus appeal to the government of India to cooperate with us in developing procedures to ascertain the facts of the case and to enable the administration of justice and accountability.”

As tensions between the two countries over the assassination of Nijjar reached an all-time low on Thursday, India demanded Canada crack down hard on terrorists and anti-India groups operating from its land and halted visa services for Canadians.

India has requested that Canada reduce the size of its diplomatic mission there, stating that both countries’ diplomatic missions should be of comparable size and status. Greater than New Delhi’s diplomatic personnel in Canada is Canada’s diplomatic staff in India.
