President Rejects Mercy Petition Of Nirbhaya Convict Pawan Gupta

Mumbai: In another development, President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday dismissed the mercy petition of Pawan Gupta, one of the four death row convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case. Gupta was the last to file a mercy petition.

It comes on Monday, after a Delhi court, for the third time the death sentence of four convicts in the case stated that they cannot be executed pending a mercy petition before the President.

Advocate AP Singh, representing the Nirbhaya case, filed a mercy petition on Monday on behalf of the convict Pawan Gupta before the President of India.

On February 5, President Ram Nath Kovind rejected the mercy plea of ​​convict Akshay Singh Thakur. The mercy petition of Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh has also been dismissed till now.

However, a “full” mercy petition of Doshi Singh Thakur has also been filed claiming that the previous one, which was rejected by the President, did not contain “absolute facts”.

Meanwhile, Pawan Gupta’s plea seeking reduction of his death sentence to life imprisonment was also rejected by the Supreme Court on Monday. Three death warrants have been issued in the case so far.

The case relates to the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old paramedical student in a bus on the night of 16 December 2012 by six people, including a teenager, in Delhi. The woman died a few days later in a hospital in Singapore.
