Shiv Sena Has Decided Not To Contest West Bengal Polls, Stand In Solidarity With ‘Bengal Tigress’ Mamata: Sanjay Raut

Mumbai: In a turn of events, the Shiv Sena announced on Thursday that they would not contest the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections, but would extend their full support in Mamata Banerjee’s re-election campaign as chief minister for a third term.

“A lot of people are curious to know whether Shiv Sena is contesting West Bengal polls or not. So…after discussions with party president Uddhav Thackeray…looking at the present scenario, it appears like a ‘Didi vs All’ fight. All ‘M’s – money, muscle and media – are being used against ‘Mamata Didi. Hence, Shiv Sena has decided not to contest West Bengal polls and stand in solidarity with her. We wish Mamata Didi a ‘roaring’ success, ’cos we believe she is the real Bengal Tigress,” senior Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut announced on social media platform Twitter.

The Shiv Sena had expressed interest in January to contest the West Bengal assembly elections with Thackeray, who is also the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

In the 2016 West Bengal assembly elections, the Shiv Sena contested 21 seats, but to no effect. Apart from this, all its candidates also lost their deposits.

West Bengal elections will be held in eight phases, from 27 March to 29 April. The results will be announced on 2 May.
