Shiv Sena Says Battle For Maratha Reservation To Be Fought In Delhi

Mumbai: Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana said in its editorial on Monday that the fight for the Maratha reservation will be fought in Delhi. It has been said in the editorial that it has become necessary to knock on the door of Delhi on the issue of the Maratha reservation.

It said, “The conflict will prove to be decisive. To destabilize Maharashtra’s politics, the opposition will use the Maratha reservation issue as a weapon, then it will have to stop it in time.”

Saamana said that Rajya Sabha MP Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje played an aggressive role in the context of the Maratha reservation.

It said, “They have warned to agitate on the road if the decision is not made by June 6.” Quoting the Supreme Court’s comment, the editorial said that only the central government has the right to make such law regarding the reservation.

Saamana cited Sambhaji Raje in this context, stating, “The government has three legal options. The state can file a review petition in the Supreme Court. If it is dismissed, file an amended petition. Even if it Failing that, request the President, in accordance with Article 37 of the Constitution.”

The publication emphasized the contribution of Maratha society in the formation of Maharashtra. It states that Marathas are now financially lagging behind with a poor crop due to the deterioration of nature as well as lack of employment opportunities. Therefore, the Maharashtra government enacted a law giving 18 per cent reservation to the educationally and socially backward Maratha community.

“Therefore, the self-respect of the Marathas will have to be knocked at the door of Delhi. They will have to re-create the atmosphere of the battle of united Maharashtra in Delhi,” added Saamana.

The Supreme Court on 5 May 2021 quashed the reservation in government jobs and educational institutions for the Maratha community brought by the Maharashtra government in 2018, saying it exceeded the 50 per cent threshold already imposed.

A five-judge Constitution Bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan, L Nageswara Rao, S Abdul Nazeer, Hemant Gupta and Ravindra Bhat in its judgment said that that people from the Maratha community cannot be declared as educationally and socially backward community to bring them within the reserved category
