UNESCO, UNICEF Express Concern Over Closed Afghan Girls’ Schools

Depriving girls of education pushes them to negative mechanism as Child Marriage

Afghanistan: UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has expressed “deep concern” over closed girls’ schools in Afghanistan, saying that if the girls’ schools remain closed it will violate the fundamental right to education.

As reported by Tolo News, UNESCO Directory- General Audrey Azoulay said, “UNESCO warns about the irreversible consequences if girls are not allowed to return to school at all levels of education swiftly. In particular, the delayed return of girls in secondary schools may risk them being left behind in education and ultimately, in life. It increases the risk of dropping out from education altogether and expose them to negative coping mechanism such as child marriage. It may further widen the learning disparities between boys and girls, and ultimately hinder girl’s access to higher education and life opportunities.”

Azoulay further added that boys and girls will shape the future of Afghanistan and they should equally benefit from the right to an education.

Both UNESCO and UNICEF said that Afghanistan has made significant gains in education, especially in girl’s education and they should be preserved.
