Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu Meets Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, Discussed J&K Development

Mumbai: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu briefed the Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda on the recent decisions of the Indian government to abrogate Article 370 and the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir.

Naidu began his three-nation tour to the Baltic region on Saturday.

While interacting with Nauseda here, Naidu said that the re-organization of Jammu and Kashmir was aimed at reducing regional inequality and improving administrative efficiency and was completed within the purview of the central government.

With the scrapping Section 370, more than 100 progressive legislation has now come into force on the reservation of seats for women in the two union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and local self-government including Ladakh.

“We expect our international partners to understand that this decision concerns our national progress and prosperity. Its main objective is equity and inclusiveness.”

Further, both the leaders have agreed on the need for the United Nations to demonstrate a collective political will to adopt the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism, which was proposed by India several years ago.

They had extensive discussions on important aspects of bilateral relations as well as important issues of global and regional interest and renewed their commitment to further build friendly relations between the two countries.

Hitting out over terrorism Naidu urged all the countries to intensify their collective efforts to eliminate the menace and also isolate nations which aid and abet terrorism.

Meanwhile, he also pointed out that India was now among the fastest-growing major economies in the world and wanted Lithuanian businesses to take advantage of the opportunities available.

The two leaders witnessed the signing of agreements on agriculture and allied sectors and cultural exchange program from 2019-21.

The Vice President will also visit Latvia and Estonia during his three-nation visit.
