Congress Leader P.Chidambaram Terms Chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir’s Detention In J&K As ‘Illegal’

Mumbai: Former finance minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday called the detention of party’s Jammu and Kashmir chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir as “outrageously illegal” and hoped that the courts will take cognizance of the matter.

He called out to the matter in a series of tweets.

“There was no written order of detention. Outrageously illegal … I hope the courts will act and secure the liberty of citizens,” he wrote.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad also criticized the arrest of Mir and senior leader Ravinder Sharma in Jammu.

Police detained the chief spokesperson and former MLC of Congress Ravinder Sharma at the party headquarters in Jammu and hence prevented the Jammu Kashmir unit of the congress from addressing a press conference on Friday.

Mir was put under house arrest in Jammu in the afternoon. While the state government maintained that the situation was normal in Jammu, opposition leaders were not even allowed to address press conferences.
