We Were Not Allowed To Go Beyond The Airport: Rahul Gandhi On Being Sent Back From J&K Airport

Mumbai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Leaders of the opposition went to visit Shrinagar on Saturday. They hoped to meet the people of Kashmir and get the measure of the situation in the valley, but they were sent back to Delhi from the Shrinagar airport by the Jammu and Kashmir authorities.

“The threat of cross-border terrorism continues to exist. The security forces are maintaining a state of high alert,” Principal Secretary, J-K government, Rohit Kansal, who is also the state government’s spokesman, said to PTI.

The party comprised of Rahul Gandhi, Ghulam Nabi Azad, D Raja, Sharad Yadav, Manoj Jha, Majeed Memon, and others.

The security forces are still on high alert along the Line of Control(Loc) and international border(IB).

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad called Centre’s J&K move a murder of democracy.

“They did not let us go outside, the situation in J&K is tense, I cannot define the situation of the valley in words, we wanted to go and visit the state to see it, this is the reason that we were not allowed to visit, it’s a murder of democracy, leaders are under arrest,” Azad said

“I Was invited by the Governor to visit the state which I accepted. I took senior leaders from the parties to see the situation, but we were not allowed to go beyond the airport, press people were mishandled, it is clear that things are not normal in the state,” Rahul said.

Opposition delegation led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote to Budgam district magistrate expressing objection to the decision to send them back from Srinagar airport.

The people residing in the valley are still in a state of terror and confusion, protest marches were recorded in the valley since the scrapping off of Article 370.
