AB De Villiers Has Decided Once And For All That He Won’t Come Out Of Retirement: CSA

Mumbai: Cricket South Africa has said that their discussions with AB de Villiers regarding his potential comeback to the national side have concluded.

It was speculated that he would be selected for the upcoming tour of the West Indies where the Proteas are scheduled to play two Tests and five T20 Internationals. Head coach Mark Boucher and de Villiers himself hoped that things were heading in the right direction for a comeback later.

However, when the team was announced for the tour of West Indies and Ireland in South Africa on Tuesday (18 May), de Villiers was missing his name. This raised a lot of eyebrows until Cricket South Africa clarified in its press release that the discussion with the now-retired cricketer ended, he decided not to play for the country again.

What happened behind the scenes is that AB de Villiers had to take such a decision. During the now suspended IPL 2021, the man confirmed that he and Boucher would discuss the possibility of playing for South Africa before the T20 World Cup later this year.

“Discussions with AB de Villiers have concluded with the batsman deciding once and for all, that his retirement will remain final,” CSA said in its statement according to journalist Saj Sadiq.

Ab De Villiers made his international debut in a Test match against England in 2004 and first played a One Day International (ODI) in early 2005. His debut in Twenty20 International cricket came in 2006.

He scored over 8,000 runs in both Test and ODI cricket and is one of the very few batsmen to have a batting average of over fifty in both forms of the game. In limited-overs cricket, he is an attacking player.

He holds the record for the fastest ODI century in just 31 balls. He also recorded the fastest ODI 50 and 150. He has a healthy average of 63.52 in World Cups.
