Arresting Leaders Will Allow Terrorists Fill Gap: Rahul Gandhi

Mumbai: Attacking Narendra Modi and his government, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said arresting the political leaders and former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir will encourage terrorists.

Gandhi said in a tweet that it is both “short-sighted and foolish” of the government to arrest political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir as the leadership vacuum will encourage terrorists to fill up space in the troubled state that has just been served a jolt on Monday.

The Congress leader said, “Kashmir’s mainstream political leaders have been jailed at secret locations. This is unconstitutional & undemocratic. It’s also short-sighted and foolish because it will allow terrorists to fill the leadership vacuum created by GOI. The imprisoned leaders must be released. (sic)”

Earlier in the day, Rahul reacted for the first time over Article 370 and said “National integration isn’t furthered by unilaterally tearing apart J&K, imprisoning elected representatives and violating our Constitution. This nation is made by its people, not plots of land.”

After being under house arrest for a day, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, along with other politicians from Kashmir, were arrested on Monday night. The arrests were made late at night after the Modi government announced its decision to repeal Article 370 giving special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee have also pulled the centre out of arrest. He said, “They are political personalities and are not terrorists, they should be released immediately. The Center should create faith in people, not terrorism.”
