Citizenship Amendment Act Is ‘Discriminatory’ And National Civil Register Would Harm Poor: Sonia Gandhi

The BJP government has completely disregarded the voice of the people and used brutal force to suppress dissent

Mumbai: Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi gave the slogan of the Narendra Modi-led government, saying that the ruling party has disregarded the voice of the people by using “brute force” to suppress dissent and assured the people that their party Is committed to disobeying their fundamental rights.

“There have been protests in universities and educational institutions across the country against the BJP government’s partition agenda and anti-people policies. In a democracy, people have the right to voice their voice against the government’s policies and lodge their concerns.” Gandhi said in a video message.

She said, “It is the duty of the government to address the concerns of the people. The BJP government has completely disregarded the voice of the people and used brutal force to suppress dissent. It is unacceptable in a democracy.”

The Congress chief said that the Citizenship Amendment Act is “discriminatory” and that the National Civil Register (NRCO) would specifically harm the poor.

“The CAA is discriminatory and the proposed nationwide NRC will particularly hurt the poor and vulnerable. Like demonetization, people have to stand in queues to prove their citizenship with their ancestors,” she said.

Protests began across the country over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which seeks to grant citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who entered India on or before 31, 2014.
