“George Represented Best Of India’s Political Leadership” PM Narendra Modi

Mumbai: In a shocking incident India’s former Defence Minister George Fernandes died today. As per reports her was suffering from Swine Flu, he was 88.  George represented the best of India’s political leadership” and was “frank and fearless”,  “forthright and farsighted” said PM Narendra Modi.

“When we think of Mr. George Fernandes, we remember most notably the fiery trade union leader who fought for justice, the leader who could humble the mightiest of politicians at the hustings, a visionary Railway Minister and a great Defence Minister who made India safe and strong,” PM Modi said.

“During his long years in public life, George Sahab never deviated from his political ideology. He resisted the Emergency tooth and nail. His simplicity and humility were noteworthy,” he said.

He was the Defense Minister in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government (1998-2004) when the Kargil war took place between India and Pakistan and India conducted its nuclear tests in Pokhran. A veteran socialist, Fernandes has been linked to various disputes, including the Barak Missile scam and Tehelka case. George Fernandes won nine Lok Sabha elections from 1967 to 2004.

Fernandes is the only defense minister of a nuclear power, whose office had a picture of bombing on Hiroshima. He made 18 visits to the snowy heights of Siachen Glacier, 6,600 meters (4.1 miles) in Kashmir, which records the “world’s highest battlefield”. They were known for monitoring the massive increase in the defense budget of India compared to the allocation made by previous governments.
