Mumbai May Witness Partial Lockdown: Guardian Min Amid COVID-19 Surge

Mumbai: Mumbai Guardian Minister Aslam Shaikh warned that the Maharashtra government will have to consider imposing a partial lockdown if COVID-19 cases don’t reduce in the city.

Shaikh told TOI that the option of the partial lockout in Mumbai was discussed in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. He said the CM expressed concern that the active cases have gone back to the climax seen in September last year.

The guardian minister said the government would first try to control the infection by implementing measures such as imposing fines for not wearing masks or crowding the marriage halls and pubs. Institutional quarantine may be an option and increasing testing and speeding up large-scale vaccination programs may be other options.

“Finally a partial lockdown could be imposed if cases continue to increase,” Shaikh added.
