Will ‘Gatecrash’ Mumbai Weddings That Don’t Follow COVID-19 Norms: BMC

Mumbai: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday warned people it will “gatecrash” weddings that don’t follow COVID-19 norms, “for the safety of Mumbai”.

This comes after a surge in the number of Covid-19 cases in Mumbai.

The civic body said in a tweet, “As much as we love ‘The Big Fat Indian Weddings’, we hope that you’re following all COVID-19 norms. After all, ‘safety’ is the best gift you could give to the newlyweds.”

Coronovirus cases in Maharashtra have been increasing since the month of February.

There were 8,744 new coronavirus viruses and 22 deaths in the state on Monday. Mumbai, its capital, reported 1,014 new COVID-19 cases and four deaths in a single day. The city has been registering more than 1,000 cases for six consecutive days.

According to the data provided by BMC, there are 10,779 active coronavirus caseloads in Mumbai till Monday evening.

Maharashtra is one of the top contributors to the country’s active coronavirus cases. Several district officials in Maharashtra have banned bidding to control the spread of infection.

Amaravati went into lockdown in February, which was later extended. Thane too has announced lockdown starting from March 13 to last till March 31 in 11 hotspots of the region Thane on Tuesday registered 610 new COVID-19 cases, out of which the total number of the city was more than 2.70 lakh, PTI quoted officials as saying.

While no lockdown has been imposed in Mumbai so far, BMC is taking such measures to stop the spread of the virus. Mumbai’s mayor Kishori Pednekar had earlier too warned the citizens to adhere to the Covid safety measures or strict restrictions will need to be reinforced.
