No Plan To Impose National Lockdown, Focus On Small Containment Zones: Sitharaman

Mumbai: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has reached out to industry associations to reassure them that government has no plan to impose another national lockdown and will instead focus on creating small containment zones.

Industry Minister Animesh Saxena said in a statement that the Finance Minister reached out to the President of the Federation of Indian Micro and Small and Medium Enterprises (FISME).

According to ET, Saxena says, “I get a call from FM Nirmala Sitharaman that we have to prepare the government to handle the recent ups and downs of COVID cases.”

In addition, FM Sitharaman apprised the government of the preparations to handle the recent surge of coronavirus.

Saxena said that the Finance Minister mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are in constant touch with all states to monitor the situation and provide all support regarding the availability of oxygen, essential medicines and medical facilities.

Rajiv Kumar, vice chairman of the government think-tank Niti Aayog, has said that India needs to be prepared for “more uncertainty” for the sentiments of consumers as well as investors due to the resurgence of the coronovirus case, and the Center responds to fiscal measures.

Meanwhile, daily positivity rate in the last 12 days doubled to 16.7 per cent from 8 per cent. On Sunday, India added a record 2,61,500 new coronavirus infections.
