Pak PM Imran Khan To Address Nation Today To Seek Vote Of Confidence

Mumbai: A day after the defeat in the Senate election, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will address the nation on Thursday at 7.30 pm to seek a confidence vote from the MPs.

Geo News reported that the government would need a session of the National Assembly on Saturday to get a confidence vote from MPs.

Pakistan’s Information Minister Shibli Faraj said, “The session of the National Assembly has been called for Saturday afternoon.”

“The Prime Minister will address the nation today and another decision has been taken by him – after consultation with senior party leaders and government colleagues – that Sadiq Sanjrani will be our candidate for the Senate chairman post again, keeping in mind his performance over the past two to three years,” he added.

The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) secured 18 seats in the Senate elections. However, the victory was fruitless as opposition party Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate Yusuf Raza Gilani defeated PTI’s Hafeez Sheikh from the Islamabad general seat.

Gilani defeated Sheikh by 169 votes. According to a report by Geo News, the Returning Officer, who announced the results after the counting was over in the National Assembly, said that out of a total of 340 ballots in the National Assembly, six were rejected.

After announcing his victory in the Senate election, Gilani said in a press conference, “This is a victory for democracy … The Islamabad seat was the most important seat in the Senate elections and everyone was eyeing it. [Through my win], the PDM has been victorious.”

“Democracy is the best revenge. Jeya Bhutto!” said PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari in a tweet following Gillani’s win.
