Will ‘Supply COVID-19 Vaccine Only To Central Governments, Says Pfizer

Mumbai: US pharma major Pfizer said on Monday that the company would only supply the COVID-19 vaccine to central governments and super-national organizations. The vaccine manufacturer further clarified that further allocation of doses would be the decision of local governments.

“Pfizer will supply COVID-19 vaccine only to central governments and supranational organisations for deployment in national immunization programs. Allocation of doses & implementation plan within a country is a decision for local governments based on relevant health authority guidance,” the company said, news agency ANI quoted.

The clarification from Pfizer came after the Punjab and Delhi governments claimed that the pharma companies had rejected their request to send the vaccines to the states. While the Punjab government was denied by Moderna, the Delhi government claimed that Moderna and Pfizer refused to supply the vaccine directly to them.

The Government of India (GOI) and Pfizer BioNTech are in discussions to bring Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19vaccine for use in India.

In a statement on Monday, Pfizer spokesperson said: “Pfizer’s discussions with the GOI are ongoing and we are hopeful to bring the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for use in the country. We are unable to divulge further details at this moment.”

Pfizer said globally customized supply chains are needed for the development, manufacture, distribution and storage of complex innovative products, including mRNA technology.

Pfizer and BioNTech have set a target to deliver over 2.5 billion vaccine doses in 2021. This includes expanding the manufacturing capabilities and increasing the supplier base for key materials to the supply chain, said the company official.
