Arrest Of Arnab Goswami Is Scandalous, Unfair And Worrying Says Law Minister Ravi Shankar, Prasad

Mumbai: Law minister and senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday said that the arrest of Arnab Goswami, editor-in-chief of Republic TV was “scandalous, unfair and worrying”.

He also questioned the silence of the Congress leadership, when his government in Maharashtra was “violating the freedom of the press.”

Mumbai police on Wednesday arrested Goswami in Mumbai on charges of forcing a 53-year-old interior designer to commit suicide, a police officer said.

“The arrest of senior journalist Arnab Goswami is seriously reprehensible, unwarranted, and worrisome. We had fought for the freedom of Press as well while opposing the draconian Emergency of 1975,” Prasad said in a series of tweets.

“Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have openly attacked Narendra Modi Govt through motivated charges of attack on institutions yet they are completely silent when their Govt in Maharashtra is blatantly suppressing freedom of Press. The textbook case of hypocrisy!”

“One can differ, one can debate and one can ask questions too. However arresting a journalist of the stature of Arnab Goswami by abuse of police power, because he was asking questions, is something which we all need to condemn,” the Union minister said.

Republic TV has alleged that Arnab was attacked by policemen and then forcibly taken to Raigad in Maharashtra. While it is unclear in which case he has been arrested, Republic TV reported that Arnab has been detained in connection with the 2018 suicide of interior designer Anvay Naik, who allegedly designed the Republic Studio. A case of abetment to suicide was registered against Arnab in Raigad as the family alleged that the suicide occurred on non-payment of bills. Arnab was first placed in a car and then pushed into a van, according to scenes on the channel. As he was being taken into the van, Arnab told the cameras that he and his family were beaten up inside the house.
