China: Baby Tests Positive For Coronavirus Just 30 Hours After Birth

Mumbai: China’s state media reported on Wednesday that the novel coronavirus has been detected 30 hours after the birth of a child in China’s pandemic-hit Wuhan city.

The infant is the youngest person to be infected with the virus, which has killed nearly 500 people since it emerged late last year.

CCTV quoted experts as saying that it could be a case of “vertical transmission” referring to infection from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery or soon after. The mother tested positive for the virus before giving birth.

The official Xinhua news agency reported on Monday that the birth of an infected mother’s child was tested negative last week. The disease is believed to have surfaced in December at the Wuhan market, selling wild animals, and spreading rapidly as people travelled to the Lunar New Year holiday in January.

The National Health Commission of China said on Tuesday that the oldest person to be diagnosed with the virus is 90 years old and that 80 per cent of deaths have been reported from patients 60 years and older.
