COVID-19: Indian Premier League Suspended Until Further Notice

Mumbai: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 has been suspended until further notice due to ‘developing global health concerns’.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided by the IPL Governing Council that the 2020 edition would be carried out only if it was safe and appropriate to do so.

“Due to global health concerns about COVID-19 and lockdown measures implemented by the Indian government to prevent the spread of the pandemic, the IPL Governing Council of BCCI has decided that the IPL 2020 season will be suspended for further notice,” BCCI said in a statement.

“The health and safety of the nation and everyone involved in our great game is our top priority and as such, BCCI along with franchise owners, broadcasters, sponsors and all stakeholders accept that the IPL 2020 season will only commence when it is safe and appropriate to do so,” the statement added.

Initially, the league was scheduled to begin on March 29.

The statement further stated, “BCCI will continue to monitor and review the situation regarding the possible start date in close partnership with all its stakeholders and seek guidance from the Government of India, State Governments and other state regulatory bodies.”

India is currently under a nationwide lockdown till May 3.
