Aggarwal further said that COVID-19 cases in India are being reported at a rate much lower than the world average.

“If 69.9 cases per million population have been reported worldwide, India has 10.7 cases per million population,” he said, adding that the comparison was based on absolute numbers.

Agarwal said that lockdowns, social distancing, and other guidelines have helped India perform better than other countries in dealing with the crisis.

“Spain has 504 cases per lakh population, Belgium 499 per lakh, America has 486 cases per lakh, while in the lower end of the spectrum to Mexico, has 52.2 cases per lakh population.”

The Joint Secretary stated that India’s death rate due to COVID-19 is much lower than other countries in other respects.

“While each death reported is traumatic, the worldwide death rate is seen at 6.4 percent (due to COVID-19), therefore, India has the lowest death rate among countries with the most cases,” he said.
