A teacher plays an important role in shaping one’s life and career. The relationship between a guru and his shishya is unique and sacred, and so to celebrate this bond, every year Hindus, Jains and Buddhist celebrate Guru Purnima. This occasion falls on the full moon day of the Shakha Samavat in the Hindu calendar and this year it falls on the 16th of July, 2019. The festival commemorates the goodness of spiritual gurus and teachers as thousands of devotees worship and thank their gurus for enlightenment. The festival was revived by Mahatma Gandhi to tribute to his spiritual guru Shrimad Ramchandra.

It is believed that after five weeks of achieving enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, Buddha went from Bodhgaya to Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh where he gave his first sermon on the full moon day. The followers of Buddha thus, celebrate this day to worship him.

The festival is celebrated in countries like India, Nepal and other countries of Buddhist and Jain influence. People worship their spiritual preceptors by keeping fast and giving them gifts. They visit their temples and offer them respect and seek their blessings.

This festival also has its own significance in Hindu legend and Yogic Hinduism.
